Chapter 8

I stare at the screen, checking what I’ve typed up for the last time before I leave and check on Hanna.

Merely the thought of her makes me hard and makes my stomach burn with heat. The heat isn’t a problem when it’s cool in the office, but...

I glance at the sides and at the other screens. No one is around. It looks like I’m the only who has to be here working on boring stuff.

I picked the corner, which turned out to be a smart decision. I feel my own hardness. She is making everything tough. Thinking about her alone makes me hard. While I should focus on why and how I found her last night, my mind keeps wondering. It’s going to take an effort to figure out whether I’m typing some readable words, which I hope I am.

What’s she doing now? Maybe the doctor has finished checking her. Is she waiting for me? Will she—

I sit up and focus on the screen. I have to finish this quickly. She said that she wanted to head home. I should make sure I watch her closely so she can’t attempt something stupid.

I turn to the window at the far end of the office room. The snow is worse than when we left home, but still nice enough, which also means it will be tempting for her to sneak onto a ship and try to get home. There’s no telling whether someone would be able to rescue her again.

The thought hammers into me and I stare at the screen harder, checking to make sure what I typed is accurate.

What if I lost her?

The burn in my stomach grows the more I think about that, but I can’t stop myself. Maybe the burn is from how I haven’t asked her about being my mate. Will she be ready for that? Will she let me ask? Will I be embarrassing myself?

I click submit and stand the moment the report is completed. My office chair slams all the way back to the wall, making a crashing noise that shudders the whole office. I flinch and wait for a second. No one screams and dashes in here, so I’m probably safe.

I put the chair back and do all the admin work I need to remember before I hurry out of the office. This is such a boring and lifeless place.

Going down the stairs, my legs are in such a hurry that I almost trip on myself. It will be so dumb if I fall and crash on the stairs. Hanna is going to laugh at me.

She’s there waiting in the lobby, next to the reception. She is staring at the floor as if there’s something interesting there.

I head over to her with my heart racing. There is a frown on her face. Did the doctor find something bad?

She looks up when I’m a few steps away from her. She jumps and wraps her arms around me before I can stop her.

The nurse...

Oh... She’s heading to the corridor with her back against us.
